To immerse yourself in living conditions and treatment of prisoners, the Burkinabe Movement for the Emergence of Social Justice (MBEJUS) paid a visit to the prison and correction of Ouagadougou (MACO), the June 24, 2008. Below, we will deliver the report said movement in extenso.

On Tuesday, June 24, 2008, a delegation of MBEJUS composed of eight (08) persons including two (02) of the Embassy of the United States, three (03) media and three (03) MBEJUS, headed by Mr. Alexander Pagomziri Ouedraogo, president of MBEJUS, paid a visit to the MACO (House of Detention and Correction of Ouagadougou).

It is a building-level, in very poor condition and representing a hazard to occupants. On the day of the visit, they were more than 1328 prisoners on 303% of population. Cells with an area of 12m2 house 12-17 prisoners. Lack of space forces the occupation of all the corridors of some prisoners.

Given the number of (defendants) prisoners awaiting trial who is over 48% of the prison population, MBEJUS invites the authorities of justice to develop initiatives for expeditious handling of cases awaiting trial such as organization of empty locker before each operation judicial vacancy.

The safety of residents and staff of the Guard of prison security is a concern given the number of agents in charge of security of MACO. More than 30 prisoners to a GSP while safety standards require 3 to 1 GSP. Strengthening staff security remains a concern.

The improvement of the quality of meals and increased food intake, it should be noted that the ration is a ladle of batter to corn or millet on average 450 grams per resident and 24 hours.
